The Great Fire Of London started in the bakery of Thomas Farriner on Sunday, 2nd September 1666. By the time the fire burnt itself out, an area one and a half miles by half a mile in the City had been destroyed. The Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Bloodworth, wasn't very good at leading the firefighting efforts, so Charles II took over. Meanwhile, Samuel Pepys was busy recording the events as they unfolded in his diary.
