NARRATOR 1: In 43 A.D., England became part of the mighty Roman Empire that stretched from northern Europe to the shores of north Africa and the Middle East.
CLAUDIUS: That's because I invaded with my legions and I even brought along some fearsome war elephants to scare the locals.
(Two Elephants wave happily and then start juggling.)
CLAUDIUS: (Shaking head.)This is the last time I use elephants trained by the circus! (To Two Elephants:) Can you please try to look scary?
(Two Elephants growl like tigers and show imaginary claws. Claudius hides face.)
NARRATOR 2: So Claudius, what do you think about your new province of Britannica?
CLAUDIUS: Well, the locals have no public baths, they paint themselves blue, their druid priests make horrible sacrifices and... There's even worse, but it's too shocking to mention.
NARRATOR 1: Come on, Claudius! You can tell us.
CLAUDIUS: Their women can be chieftains and even fight in battle! I mean these people are simply barbarians! We're just here to crush the Celts, take all the wealth and make me look good. (Pause.) Sorry, I, er, meant to say spread civilisation.
(Two Elephants shake heads in disagreement.)
CLAUDIUS: Okay, I'm off to marry someone, again. Bye!
(Exit Claudius followed by Two Elephants. Enter KING PRASUTAGUS and MORGAN looking around the stage.)
MORGAN: I hope we don't run into any of those Romans.
KING PRASUTAGUS: They don't even wash with soap. They watch gladiators fight for fun and their women don't have the same rights as men.
MORGAN: I heard that they clean their teeth with powdered mouse brains and think asparagus is delicious! I mean these Romans are simply barbarians.
KING PRASUTAGUS: That's right, Morgan, but I'm King Prasutagus of the Iceni and they have given me lots of money to buy Roman wine and luxuries because I'm their ally. So, it's not that bad after all.
MORGAN: Hooray! Let's party!
(Exit King Prasutagus and Morgan.)
NARRATOR 2: However, after seventeen years of Roman rule most Celts were furious, especially in East Anglia.
